At Newark Smiles Dental, we begin monitoring wisdom tooth development in patients between the ages of 16 and 25, using panoramic X-rays to evaluate the position, angle, and impaction status of each tooth individually. Early evaluation allows us to identify potential problems before they cause symptoms and to plan removal at the ideal time for the simplest procedure and the fastest recovery.

Understanding Wisdom Teeth and Why They Cause Problems
If you are between the ages of 16 and 25, a discussion about your wisdom teeth should take place. Wisdom teeth, the third set of molars, appear in the very back of each area of your mouth including the upper left, lower left, upper right, and lower right. In a small number of patients, enough space exists for these molars to move into proper position without causing any problems. But most commonly, they simply do not belong, or they are not lined up correctly. Wisdom teeth can lay entirely on their sides or lean at various angles into the neighboring teeth, creating a range of problems that range from mild to serious.
Wisdom teeth causing pain and infection give a clear warning sign that treatment needs to be considered. But some problems can also develop slowly over time without any obvious awareness. If you are an adult with wisdom teeth that have not been recently evaluated, have them assessed periodically for changes using a panoramic X-ray.
What Happens During Wisdom Tooth Removal at Newark Smiles Dental
Consultation and Planning
Your wisdom tooth journey begins with a comprehensive evaluation. Our doctors will take a panoramic X-ray to assess the position, angle, depth, and root shape of each wisdom tooth. We will classify each tooth, explain our findings clearly, and discuss whether removal is recommended for any or all of the teeth. If removal is recommended, we will outline the procedure, discuss sedation options, and answer all of your questions before scheduling the extraction appointment.
Anesthesia and Sedation
On the day of your extraction, local anesthesia is administered to completely numb the area. For patients who are anxious about the procedure or who are having multiple wisdom teeth removed at once, sedation options are available to ensure a relaxed and comfortable experience. Our doctors will discuss which sedation approach is most appropriate for your specific needs at your consultation.
Simple Wisdom Tooth Extraction
If a wisdom tooth has fully erupted and has straightforward roots, it may be removed using the same gentle technique as any other simple extraction. The tooth is carefully loosened and removed, the site is cleaned, and gauze is placed to support clot formation.
Surgical Wisdom Tooth Extraction
For partially or fully impacted wisdom teeth, a surgical approach is required. A small, precise incision is made in the gum tissue to access the tooth and the surrounding bone. The tooth may be divided into sections to allow for the most conservative removal possible, minimizing the amount of bone that needs to be disturbed. The site is thoroughly cleaned and the incision is closed with sutures that dissolve on their own over time.
Recovery in Our Office
After the procedure, you will rest in our office for a brief period before being discharged with complete written aftercare instructions. If sedation was used, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home. We will review everything you need to know about caring for your extraction sites before you leave.
How We Classify Wisdom Teeth at Newark Smiles Dental
When evaluating wisdom teeth, our doctors consider four general classifications. A panoramic X-ray provides a vital diagnostic tool for determining the classification of each wisdom tooth. It is even possible for one patient to have one of each type across their four wisdom teeth.
- Erupted: This simply means the tooth moved through the surface of the gums just like your other teeth. Eruption generally doesn’t occur before age 16, but can happen at nearly any age after that. It may have adequate space for its position.
- Soft Tissue Impaction/Partially Erupted: The top of the tooth has emerged from the bone although excessive gum tissue usually covers it. Food trapped in the gum flap can lead to decay and infection.
- Partial Bony Impaction: The majority of the tooth sits below the jawbone level, although it’s beginning to emerge. A large flap of gum lies over this tooth and leaves it prone to infection and decay as mouth bacteria slip into the area.
- Complete Bony Impaction: In this case, the tooth has not broken the surface and remains entirely encased in the bone. While the risk of infection is low, a small percentage of these will form a cyst in the jaw. This hollow space can expand and result in fracture of the jaw.
