Children's Tooth Extractions in Newark, CA

Child visiting the dentist for a tooth extraction consultation

Pulling Teeth Doesn't Have to Be a Pain

An extraction can make both children and parents anxious, but they are a common procedure in most dental offices. Sometimes a child’s tooth has too much decay to restore, or they need a tooth or teeth removed to make room for orthodontic treatment.

Regardless of the reason, our doctors and the Newark Smiles Dental team will make sure you and your child are comfortable with the treatment plan.

After some local anesthetic, our doctors will remove your child’s tooth. If it is impacted or if it is a complicated removal, the doctor will discuss with you if sedation options are recommended. Once the tooth is removed, our doctors will give you post-op instructions and place a small piece of gauze over the extraction site to stop any bleeding and to help a clot form. Check and replace the gauze every 20 minutes until the bleeding stops.

What to Expect During Your Child's Tooth Extraction

An extraction can make both children and parents anxious but tooth extractions are among the most common procedures performed in dental offices, and in experienced, gentle hands they are far more comfortable than most families expect.

Sometimes a child's tooth has too much decay to restore effectively, or a tooth or teeth need to be removed to make room for proper orthodontic treatment. Whatever the reason for your child's extraction, our team will explain it clearly and answer every question you have before treatment begins.

Regardless of the reason, our doctors and the Newark Smiles Dental team will make sure you and your child are comfortable with the treatment plan before we proceed.

Post-Extraction Care Tips for the First 24 Hours

Use over-the-counter or prescribed pain reliever if recommended by the dentist.
Give your child soft foods for the first 24 hours after their extraction.
DO NOT allow your child to drink from a straw, rinse their mouths out, spit, or brush that area for at least 24 hours after tooth removal. This could dislodge the blood clot and cause a very painful issue called dry socket.
Place an ice pack wrapped in a towel over the area for about 20 minutes to relieve swelling and discomfort.
Immediately call our office if your child experiences fever, immense pain, or chills.

Newark Smiles Dental always considers your child’s comfort regardless of the type of treatment they are receiving. Our Doctors will discuss their unique situation with you to determine the best way to help them receive the treatment they need.

Frequently Asked Questions About Children’s Tooth Extractions

With modern local anesthesia, your child should not feel any pain during the extraction procedure itself. They may feel pressure and movement as the tooth is loosened and removed — but not sharp pain. We use topical anesthetic before any injection and always confirm the area is fully numb before proceeding. Some soreness in the area is normal for the first day or two after the procedure and can be managed with children's over-the-counter pain relief.

Our doctors will always attempt to save a tooth if saving it is clinically appropriate. If a tooth has too much decay to restore with a filling or crown, has suffered significant trauma, is severely infected, or needs to be removed for orthodontic reasons, extraction may be the recommended course of action. We will explain our reasoning thoroughly and answer all of your questions before any decision is made.

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot that forms over the extraction site becomes dislodged or dissolves before the wound has healed — exposing the underlying bone and nerves and causing significant discomfort. It is prevented by avoiding straws, rinsing, spitting, and brushing the extraction site for at least 24 hours after the procedure. Follow all aftercare instructions carefully and contact us immediately if your child experiences increasing pain after the first couple of days.

A space maintainer may be recommended if a baby tooth is extracted before it would naturally fall out — to hold the space open for the incoming permanent tooth and prevent neighboring teeth from drifting. Whether a space maintainer is needed depends on which tooth was removed, your child's age, and how close the permanent tooth beneath it is to erupting. Our doctors will assess this and discuss it with you at the extraction appointment.

Most dental insurance plans cover tooth extractions for children — though coverage percentages vary by plan and whether the extraction is classified as simple or surgical. Our team will verify your child's benefits before their appointment and provide a clear, transparent cost estimate. We also offer CareCredit financing for families who need flexible payment options.
